Rosemary and Olive Bread

Today I decided to try something scrazy–super crazy. Bread. I decided to make bread by following this recipe (kind of). And it really worked:

It rose! Like bread dough is supposed to!

I substituted the sugar for honey, and ignored all the crazy pizza stone instructions and just cooked in a pan in the oven for 30 minutes at about 350 degrees.  It’s actually really delicious and I can’t wait to make and eat more of it.

Dinner last night: sweet potato soup and eggplant focaccia

After feeling a bit uninspired turning to our usual dinner selections, I started scouring tastespotting for interesting takes on some items in our fridge, and let me just say, I am now obsessed with tastespotting.

Trent made this sweet potato soup recipe:

It was so surprising: a velvety texture and layered flavors of coconut, curry, hints of sweetness, and a refreshing pop of cilantro and lime.

I made this:

This recipe was a pretty good find as well, but I’d probably want to add a bit more salt next time.

Day trip: floods, apple picking and hiking in Upstate New York

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We desperately needed a weekend away from New York…it’s refreshing that only a 45 minute drive away there can be so much zen.

We first went to New Paltz, a small hippy town, with plans to go apple picking and hiking in Minnewaska State Park…but got there and the road was closed down. We got out to walk the closed road and everything was completely flooded. The corn field was underwater (pic 1), the roads were submerged under water…I’ve never seen anything like it. It was sad and beautiful all at once–eerily serene. It’s crazy to know that so much farm land was destroyed, and yet not have any idea what it looked like before the storm.

While our plans were thrown a bit off course, we found ourselves another apple farm and some small hiking trails along the Hudson. We spent some quiet minutes gazing over the Hudson, which I’ll always be able to escape to now when I need a break from the city.

Ramadan dinner party

Trent and I observed our first married Ramadan this year…in August, which was oh so long. We work up at 3, Trent was amazing and cooked big delicious breakfasts, which ate with both eyes closed, then we got ready for work, worked from 6-2, slept, and woke up with enough time to get food ready before sunset.

One of our favorite days from this blur of a month was our impromptu Ramadan dinner party. We shot out an invite the day before an had 12 of our good friends come.

Getting the pita bread ready

Trent learned quickly that it’s really hard to cook for 12 without being able to taste the food, but he’s pretty genius and pulled it off without a hitch
